So, an invitation arrives and it indicates a dress code. Mentally, you begin to check off the dresses in your closet. Are any of them appropriate? Why do we need to have dress codes? What do these different codes mean? “Black tie,” Why? You begin to get confused, overwhelmed and even in some instances discouraged from attending the function just because you really don’t understand the dress code.
Well, I’m sure this has happened to a lot of us. This is why I find myself writing this very informative blog, to share Stylistic’s guidelines on “How to dress, when you don’t know How to dress!”
There is so much more to our dressing than we can imagine. We all don’t want to be that person who seems out of place, whether it’s being under-dressed or overdressed. The occasions dictate how we should dress to suit the mood of the events.
If you’ve ever been stumped by the appropriate dress attire for an occasion bug, then, we are here to help you.
A casual/informal dress code is essentially an open invitation to dress in whatever you feel most comfortable in. Whether you like to wear jeans and a t-shirt or dress and sneakers, you’ll be okay with this style code. There’s no need to wear heels or overdo with accessories, just wear something that is relaxed and your style. Let’s just call this one our easy breezy look.
I know for a fact we’ve always wondered what smart casual meant, until we figured it out. Smart casual is somewhat of an ambiguous dress code that calls for polished yet relaxed attire. I would say, nailing the perfect look requires balance. Smart casual is a standard dress code and, as such, is required for many events, including dinners, weddings, work functions and more. Try to pick pieces that appear elegant but are also comfortable. Just mix classic items, such as a pair of soft pants, with those that are more exciting, like an off-the-shoulder top, or our go-to, which is a cold shoulder blouse.
Now, you have a cocktail party to attend, what should you wear? These days, a cocktail party can be anything from a swanky affair to an informal social gathering where your dress is almost formal. The dress codes for these parties are usually semi-formal. Semi-formal can be a tricky dress code to navigate, think of it as being just a notch below black tie. You can’t go wrong if you wear a top with some special details and a skirt or tailored pants, or a glittery dress with heels or fancy flats.
The dreaded, “Black Tie”. This is the most formal of all dress codes. As such, it requires a sophisticated level of dressing. For us women, the code typically calls for a floor-length dress or gown. Black is a standard colour choice for gala attire and will never steer you wrong, but don’t be afraid to try other colour options, such as royal blue, red or metallics. While a classic silhouette that flatters your body type is an ideal choice, you should try adding a little excitement with unique design details and embellishments.
Ladies, you no longer need to find yourself in a pickle when you get that dreaded invite. Just remember to stay within the guidelines, and maintain true to your personal style. I can assure you, you will nail your look every time!
I hate dressing up still a work in progress on the off the shoulder. So these tips are helpful for me. Thank you
It’s a pleasure reading and looking at your blogs, your style is always on point. Need to pop in because I saw a couple of things that is calling my name…see you soon😉
